Wim Bergmans (1940 - 2018)
With sadness the Van Tienhoven Foundation for international nature protection has received the news of the passing of Dr. Wim Bergmans on the 16th of February 2018. Wim has been a member and chair of the board. His firm belief in protecting nature, in terms of species, ecosystems and the people living in these natural areas, has been a guiding compass for the foundation to this day. Throughout his life he was an inspiration and driver for putting nature conservation issues, also the lesser known ones, on the political agenda in the Netherlands and abroad.
We have come to know Wim as a kind, amiable, very knowledgeable man, and a strong advocate of nature conservation. Many of us have shared his passion for the biodiversity in the tropics. Wim, next to a busy working life at the Netherlands Committee for IUCN, has always kept working on the taxonomy of fruit bats in Africa.
We have been privileged to know and work closely with Wim. We pass on our sympathy to his family and loved ones, and cherish the good memories and stories from the tropics.
